External wall insulation is a rendered system, and render is a wet trade — it has to cure on your wall, in whatever weather that week brings. That is why EWI has seasons and waiting lists while loft insulation does not. Render detailing appears on 98 of our real quotes and scaffolding on 88, so we plan around weather windows constantly. Here is how the calendar really works, and how to use it to book smarter.
Why render has weather windows at all
An EWI system is built in stages: boards fixed to the wall, a reinforced basecoat with embedded mesh, then a thin-coat decorative render — the part you look at for decades. The boarding stage hardly cares about weather. The wet stages do, because a thin-coat render is only a few millimetres thick and cures by a mix of chemical set and drying. For those first hours and days it is vulnerable: too cold and the cure stalls or the water in it freezes; too wet and the surface washes or streaks; too hot and it dries before it has properly cured.
None of this is exotic — it is the same physics as any cementitious or polymer finish — but on EWI the render is the weatherproof skin of the whole system, so getting the cure right is not cosmetic. A compromised finish coat means patch repairs at best and a re-rendered elevation at worst. Frost and rain: the winter constraints
The two things no renderer will work into are frost during the cure and rain on a fresh coat.
Frost is the destructive one. A freshly applied coat is full of water; if that water freezes before the coat has set, it expands and breaks the render from within. The damage often is not visible until weeks later, as a friable, crazed or debonding surface. So the working rule is practical, not bureaucratic: you do not apply a wet coat when frost is expected before it has cured — which in winter means watching overnight forecasts, not just the temperature at 10am.
Rain is more forgiving but still expensive. A downpour on an uncured finish coat washes fines out of the surface and leaves streaks and lime bloom that cannot be polished away — the fix is usually re-coating. Persistent damp also slows curing generally, stretching the gap between coats and therefore the programme. This is one of the honest reasons EWI durations flex: the weather sets the pace of the wet trades, whatever the schedule says.
The problem nobody expects: summer heat
Ask homeowners when render goes wrong and they say winter. Ask renderers and they will tell you about July. A south- or west-facing wall in direct summer sun can be hot to the touch — far hotter than the air — and a thin coat applied to it flash-dries: the wall and the sun pull the water out before the coat has cured. The results are weak, dusty patches, crazing, and visible joins where one section dried before the adjacent mix went on. On a big elevation, keeping a "wet edge" — finishing the whole face before any part of it dries — becomes impossible on a hot wall.
So experienced crews treat high summer with the same respect as frost: work the shaded elevations and follow the shade around the building through the day, start early, shade the work where needed, and refuse to render a baking south face in the afternoon. If your installer happily renders any elevation at any hour of a heatwave, that tells you something.
How professionals stretch the season
Weather windows are managed, not just obeyed. The standard tools of the trade:
- Winter-grade formulations and accelerating additives that shorten the vulnerable curing window in cold weather, used within the manufacturer's system rules.
- Sheeted and shrink-wrapped scaffold — since the scaffold is up anyway, wrapping it turns each elevation into a sheltered workspace that keeps rain off fresh coats and takes the edge off frost and wind. On jobs where scaffold is already a major line item, sheeting is cheap season insurance.
- Sequencing around the forecast — boarding, fixing, beading and detailing are near weatherproof work, so crews bank the wet trades for the good days and do everything else in the bad ones. A winter EWI programme is really a rearranged EWI programme.
- Elevation-by-elevation working — completing one face through a good window rather than leaving four half-finished faces exposed.
This is how our January EWI job in Ruislip — 102m², a full wrap — got done in midwinter: not by ignoring the weather, but by building the programme around it.
The booking calendar, honestly
Spring books first, every year. The pattern is completely predictable: people endure a cold winter, resolve to fix the house, and call in February and March — all wanting an April start. Spring slots go to whoever enquired in winter.
Summer is prime time with one asterisk — heatwave weeks slow the wet trades on sun-struck elevations, as above.
Autumn is the underrated window. Conditions are as good as spring, the panic demand has passed, and lead times are usually shorter. If you want the house warm for this winter rather than after it, an autumn start is the booking that achieves it.
Winter is viable, managed. Expect a programme with more float in it and honest pauses for weather. The compensation is availability.
Honest caveat — and what to book in winter instead
The caveat first: if a date is immovable — a landlord deadline, a sale — do not force a thin-coat render into the worst fortnight of the year to meet it. A finish rushed through frost or rain is the most expensive corner an EWI job can cut, because it is the corner you look at from the street for twenty-five years.
But there is no insulation off-season, because the internal measures do not care about weather at all. Internal wall insulation, loft insulation and floor insulation are indoor trades — winter is arguably the best time for them: crews are more available, and you feel the improvement immediately, in the season that justifies it. What is the best time of year for external wall insulation?
Spring through autumn is the natural render season: mild temperatures, walls that are neither frozen nor baking, and long working days. Spring books up first because everyone who spent the winter in a cold house calls in March. Autumn is often the smart booking — similar conditions, shorter waiting lists.
Can EWI be installed in winter?
Often, yes — with management. Boarding and fixing insulation is barely weather-sensitive; it is the basecoat and final render that need protection from frost and rain while they cure. Installers use winter-formulation additives, sheeted scaffolds and careful sequencing to keep working through mild winter spells. What a good installer will not do is throw a thin-coat finish onto a freezing, saturated wall to hit a date. We completed a 102m² EWI project in Ruislip in January — winter EWI is workable when it is planned as winter work.
Why can’t render be applied in frost or rain?
Thin-coat renders cure by hydration and drying in their first hours and days. Frost freezes the water in an uncured coat and breaks its structure; rain washes out or streaks a fresh finish. Either can mean patching or re-doing a whole elevation — so installers simply do not render into frost or rain, and protect fresh coats until they have set.
Does hot weather cause problems for rendering?
Yes — the opposite problem. On a hot wall in direct summer sun, a thin-coat render dries too fast: the water is pulled out before the coat cures properly, which risks weak, crazed or patchy finishes and visible joins where one mix dried before the next arrived. Installers manage it by following the shade around the building, working early, and shading elevations — or simply not rendering the south face at 3pm in a heatwave.
How far in advance should I book EWI?
For a spring start, enquire in winter — spring diaries fill first, every year. Survey-to-quote is fast (ours is 24 hours as standard); it is the installation slot that queues. Booking an autumn or winter-planned slot usually means a shorter wait for the same job.
