Floor Insulation

Floor insulation tackles the heat loss and cold draughts that come up through the ground floor — something most homeowners only notice in winter, when bare feet and chilly rooms give it away. In older homes with suspended timber floors, the gap beneath the boards is ventilated to the outside air, so an uninsulated floor is effectively losing heat to the wind under your house.

Is Floor right for your home?

  • Pre-1950s homes with suspended timber ground floors
  • Rooms with persistent cold draughts at skirting level
  • Properties with an accessible cellar or crawl space (easiest install)
  • Renovations where floors are coming up anyway
  • Homes chasing quick, grant-funded efficiency wins

What is floor insulation?

There are two main scenarios. Suspended timber floors are insulated from below (in a cellar or via a crawl space) or from above by lifting boards, fitting mineral wool or rigid board between the joists on netting or battens. Solid concrete floors are insulated with rigid board above the slab, usually as part of wider renovation because it affects floor heights and door thresholds.

We are PAS2030-19 and TrustMark certified. Floor insulation is frequently one of the quick wins under the Great British Insulation Scheme for eligible homes, and it pairs especially well with draught-proofing for an immediate comfort improvement.

Floor Insulation FAQs

How much does floor insulation cost?
Suspended timber floors cost £20–£70 per m² depending on whether there's sub-floor access; solid floors £60–£100 per m². A typical 3-bed ground floor is £1,800–£4,500, often part-funded under GBIS.
Do you have to lift my floorboards?
Not always. Where there's a cellar or crawl space we insulate from below and leave your floor untouched. Without access, we carefully lift and refit boards to fit insulation between the joists.
Will it stop draughts?
Yes — combining floor insulation with draught-proofing around skirtings and board gaps is one of the most noticeable comfort upgrades, removing the cold air movement you feel at floor level.
Won't blocking the air bricks cause rot?
We never block sub-floor ventilation. The airflow that keeps timber dry is maintained; the insulation sits above it. Correct detailing here is essential and is part of our PAS2030 install.
Can it be done with solid concrete floors?
Yes, by laying rigid insulation board over the slab — but it raises floor level, so it's usually done during a renovation when thresholds and skirtings can be adjusted.
