What is EV charger?

A home EV charger is a wall-mounted unit on its own dedicated circuit from the consumer unit, usually rated at 7 kW on a single-phase supply. That is three times faster than a three-pin plug and enough to take almost any electric car from low to full overnight. The charger is either tethered, with its own fixed cable, or untethered, with a socket you plug your own cable into. All new home chargers are smart, so they can be scheduled to draw power in the cheap overnight window of a time of use tariff.

Most London and South-East homes were wired long before anyone thought of adding a 32 amp circuit to the driveway. The survey checks the consumer unit, the main fuse, the earthing arrangement and the route the cable will take to the parking space. Off-street parking is needed, because a cable cannot lawfully be run across a public pavement. Where a fuse board is old or full, a small consumer unit upgrade is often part of the job, and the installer notifies the electricity network operator (DNO) of the new load.

VAT: 20%. An EV charger is not an energy-saving material under HMRC VAT Notice 708/6, so the installation is charged at the standard 20% rate; solar panels or a battery fitted at the same time are 0% and the quote shows the split.

EV Charger Installation FAQs

How much does an EV charger cost to install?
Indicative 2026 ranges are £800 to £1,500 installed for a 7 kW charger. A long cable run, trenching across a garden or a consumer unit upgrade adds £200 to £600. VAT is 20%. Quotes are free and fixed after a survey.
Tethered or untethered: which should I choose?
Tethered means the cable is fixed to the charger, which is convenient if one car will use it every day. Untethered means a socket, so any car with any cable can use it and the wall looks tidier. Untethered is the safer choice if you may change car, or have two.
Can I charge on a cheap overnight tariff?
Yes. Every home charger sold in the UK must be a smart charger, and the app lets you set a schedule so the car only charges in the cheap window. Some tariffs also talk to the charger or the car directly. We set the schedule up at handover.
Do I need an earth rod or a new fuse board?
Usually not an earth rod: modern chargers have built-in PEN fault protection that meets the wiring regulations without one. A new consumer unit is needed only when the existing board has no spare way or is too old to add a protected circuit to. The survey tells you either way.
Does the electricity network need to be told?
Yes. A 7 kW charger is a large new load, and the installer notifies the DNO. Most London homes with a 60 to 100 amp main fuse are fine; where the fuse is small, or where a heat pump is also planned, the DNO may need to upgrade it first.
Who installs the charger?
